- Then, a total of such deciles assigned for each company is computed and best 100 companies with higher deciles are included in the list of best 100 Indian companies with global business.
The research methodology that has been adopted for computing composite rankings as well as rankings by financial performance has been mentioned below in details.
Composite Rankings
- Financial variables such as Total Sales, Total Assets, Total Equity, and Market Capitalization have been considered to compute composite rankings.
- Total sales has been computed by annualizing 9 months’ data as of December 2015, total assets and total equity have been considered as of September 2015, and market capitalization has been considered latest.
- Values have been extracted from company quarterly reports.
- Values for all four variables must be available to rank companies.
- Each of the variables has been ranked individually based on values (higher is better).
- Average of individual ranks are then used to provide composite rank for companies.
Growth Rankings
- Total Sales growth has been considered to compute growth rank of the company for latest quarter vs. previous quarter, latest quarter vs. same quarter of previous year, and latest nine months vs. nine months of previous year.
- Total sales has been computed by annualizing 9 months’ data as of December 2015.
- Individual ranks have been assigned to sales growth ratio for all three periods.
- Deciles for all three periods are then used to provide growth rank for companies.
Profitability Rankings
- Key profitability ratios such as Net Income to Total Sales, Net Income to Total Assets and Net Income to Total Equity have been computed for assigning profitability ranks.
- Total sales and net income have been computed by annualizing 9 months’ data as of December 2015, and total assets and total equity have been considered as of September 2015.
- Individual ranks have been assigned to all three ratios.
- Average of individual ranks are then used to provide profitability rank for companies.
- Negative net income i.e. net loss values are also considered for rankings.
Efficiency Rankings
- Total Sales to Total Assets and Total Sales to Total Equity have been computed for assigning efficiency ranks.
- Total sales has been computed by annualizing 9 months’ data as of December 2015, and total assets and total equity have been considered as of September 2015.
- Individual ranks have been assigned to both the ratios.
- Average of individual ranks are then used to provide efficiency rank for companies.
Market Valuation Rankings
- Key market valuation ratios such as Market Cap to Total Sales and Market Cap to Total Equity have been computed for assigning market valuation ranks.
- Market capitalization has been considered latest, total sales has been computed by annualizing 9 months’ data as of December 2015, and total equity has been considered as of September 2015.
- Individual ranks have been assigned to both the ratios.
- For market cap to total sales ratio, higher is better; while for market cap to total equity, lower is better.
- Average of individual ranks are then used to provide market valuation rank for companies.
Leverage Rankings
- Total Equity to Total Assets has been computed for assigning leverage ranks.
- Total assets and total equity have been considered as of September 2015.
- Individual ranks has been assigned to the ratio on basis of which leverage rank is provided to the companies.
- For leverage rank, lower is better.
Improvement Rankings
- Sales growth for the latest quarter vs. previous quarter, and previous quarter vs. previous to previous quarter has been computed for assigning improvement ranks.
- Sales has been computed by annualizing 9 months’ data as of December 2015.
- The companies with sales decline of greater than 10% in the previous quarter but increase of greater than 10% in the current quarter have been considered as the most improved companies.
Growth Consistency Rankings
- Sales growth for latest quarter vs. previous quarter, previous quarter vs. previous to previous quarter, and latest nine months vs. nine months of previous year has been computed for assigning growth consistency ranks.
- Sales has been computed by annualizing 9 months’ data as of December 2015.
- Individual ranks have been assigned to sales growth ratio for all three periods for companies with positive growth.
- Deciles for all three periods are then used to provide growth consistency rank for companies.
Profitability Consistency Rankings
- Key profitability ratio such as Net Income to Total Sales has been considered for assigning profitability rank to the company for the latest quarter, previous quarter, and latest 9 months.
- Net income and total sales have been computed by annualizing 9 months’ data as of December 2015.
- The companies with negative net income i.e. net loss values are skipped for this ranking.
- Individual ranks have been assigned to the profitability ratio for all three periods.
- Deciles for all three periods are then used to provide profitability consistency rank for companies.
Best 10 Rankings
- Deciles rankings have been considered based on 5 different sectional ranks – Growth rank, Profitability rank, Efficiency rank, Market Valuation rank, and Leverage rank to assign best 10 rankings.
- Each company is ranked individually for each sectional rank.
- The companies included in top 1 to 25 ranks for any of the five sectional ranks are assigned 4 points each as deciles, those included in top 26 to 50 ranks for any of the five sectional ranks are assigned 3 points each as deciles, those included in top 51 to 75 ranks for any of the five sectional ranks are assigned 2 points each as deciles, and those included in top 76 to 100 ranks for any of the five sectional ranks are assigned 1 point as deciles.
- Then, a total of such deciles assigned for each company is computed and best 100 companies with higher deciles are considered as the best 100 Indian companies with global business.
- The best 10 companies based on rankings so assigned are then sorted out for advanced financial performance, industry groups, market capitalization groups, and key attributes.
